This poor old girl has been left to rot away in a scrap yard in West Clare. As you can see, the sea air has taken a serious toll on her.
ZIE205 is a 1974 Clare reg but the car itself is a ’72 1300 model. Being RHD, the automatic assumption would be that it came from the UK. I’m sure you’re aware that back then, imported cars just got the next available number when it came to registration, there was no “ZV” or “72-CE-xxxx” reg system back then to denote an import.
Despite the advanced decay, you can see that ZIE205 was loved by someone during her motoring life, a previous owner went to the trouble of fitting Lemmerz “GT” steel wheels, a Kamei decklid vent cowl and spotlamps to the front bumper. I would assume the heated rear screen was a factory option and the photographer, long-time fan of Beetle.ie, Conor Clancy, says that ZIE205 had a factory-fitted heater too so when new, the first owner ticked a few of the “optional extras” boxes on the order form.
It’s always sad to see an old Volks in such a state, we wholeheartedly wish more of them survived. Maybe someone can get a few spares from it to go towards their own restoration so it doesn’t all go to waste.
