If you look at the Beetle registration number ZO 9984 on our Census, you will see the reference to this Beetle as it was seen in a series of photos that were discovered in a market in Germany.
The photos were taken by a German tourist travelling through Ireland back in 1958. The tourist seems to have travelled with other people who used an NSU, a moped and two Beetles; the Oval ZO 9984 and this 1958 Beetle. Where they got their fleet of vehicles from remains a mystery but it’s thanks to the dedication and research of Darren O’Rourke from Original Irish Aircooled VW Facebook group that we are able to bring you these images.
Although we don’t know a huge amount about this Beetle, the photographer or the photos themselves, sometimes a photo can do all the talking that is ever needed, and that’s exactly what we are going to do here. We hope you sit back and enjoy the period nostalgia like we did, and perhaps, imagine the towns and villages visited and the wonderfully happy memories that these German tourists experienced while touring our wonderful country. And you never know, we may yet return to this listing with an update!
