Info

This 1974 Beetle was first registered in Dublin back in September 1974. It was put to use straight away and by the 1990s it was in need of some TLC so if was off to Emilio’s Beetles to be restored. After a further 20 years of motoring the Beetle was back once again to be smartened up as well as a colour change.  It now resides in Balgriffin and is an everyday driver.

UPDATE 11/02/20: We have been contacted by Ultan, the current owner, as he has decided to sell his gorgeous Beetle after a number of very happy years behind the wheel. The wording below is what he has asked me to include and you will also see the links to the original restoration of his Beetle by Emilio’s Beetles. If you are interested in this beauty, then get in touch with us here at Beetle.ie and we’ll put you in touch with Ultan. cathal@beetle.ie or 0861665577

I bought it in June 2018, and had Emilio perform a smaller restoration including both front wheel arches, back apron, gutter, brake lines, fuel lines, new radio with USB, some sound insulation and a few more bits. It has been fully treated and sealed underneath.

No silly offers please, listed with a fair price. €6,600 OVNO.

UPDATE 24/2/20: This Beetle has now been sold and is now owned by a very happy lady in Wexford. Well done and congrats to the new owner on the purchase of a fantastic Beetle.

UPDATE 28/01/2025: We have just been contacted by the Fiona who was a previous owner of 662 DRI. I will let Fiona take it from here and you can also see the photos that Fiona has submitted. As always, we love to hear more about a car’s history so we say a huge thanks to Fiona for taking the time to update this listing.

“Hi, I’m Fiona O’Raw (nee Morrin) the third owner of 662 DRI. My father David Morrin was the second. I was the one who had Emilio’s Beetles restore my Beetle in 1997/1998.  It was surveyed and cleared on 29th January 1998. In 2009 it transported my niece to and from her wedding. In December 2009 we sold it to Emilio reluctantly because with two young children it became unsuitable for our needs. Emilio then restored it as per the links you have already shown. I’m attaching photographs of photocopies of the original log book and the before and after photos from the 90s.”

Thanks again to Fiona for the update. We can also add some more history from our own files. We can see that this Irish assembled Beetle was put together in Dublin by MDL in August 1974. The 1200 Beetle was finished in Deluxe specification so had the full chrome trim and headliner and carpets. The Beetle was painted Sahara Beige (L232) before being delivered to VW Motors in Harold’s Cross, Dublin where it was added to their stock. It didn’t take too long for this Beetle Deluxe to find its first owner, which happened on September 19th 1974. The Beetle was registered to its new Clondalkin address with the registration number 662 DRI, and that is where it stayed until 1977. It was at that point that the Morrin family stepped in when Fiona’s father bought it. Mr. Morrin then enjoyed his Beetle for the next 12 years before passing it to his daughter Fiona in 1989. Fiona used her Beetle as a daily driver and as you would expect as time moves on and 662 DRI was heading into its 20th year, Fiona’s Beetle was in need of a restoration to bring it back to its former glory. As we have seen so many times here on Beetle.ie, Emilio Macari of Emilio’s Beetles was the man to save the day. Emilio was based in North Dublin at the time so it was a perfect fit for Fiona, her Beetle and Emilio’s team. As you would have read from Fiona’s update, the restoration did not happen until 1997/1998 as there was, and still is I believe, a long waiting list for restorations in Emilio’s Beetles but when it finally emerged from Emilio’s workshops Fiona was thrilled. Sadly, as life went on, as is often the case, the Beetle’s small size was proving tricky for day to day living so the tough decision was made to sell the car. Thankfully, Emilio agreed to buy 662 DRI and the rest as they say is history, this Beetle’s history!

Thanks to Ultan, Emilio, Fiona and her father for helping to add to this Beetle’s story. We will look forward to adding to the story when the new owners get in touch.
