Info
5/7/19: “This was my first restoration, well my first aircooled restoration. I had restored a 1990 Jetta but I didn’t have to go to the extremes I did with this Beetle. It was lying in a shed for 20 years and had just 90k miles. The engine fired up straight away which was a super sign. Sadly the niceties didn’t last too long as there was rust but I suppose, having seen some of the rust buckets being restored I got off lightly.
I had to repair two front quarters and heater channels and that’s about it. It took 3-4 months of sanding and prep to get it to paint and then the colour sanding began which I regretted as soon as I started but looking at it now, it was definitely worth it. I changed the wings for early 70’s wings with tombstone rear lights. The front bumpers were swapped for ones without indicator slots as I preferred the look of the wing mounted indicator.
To compliment the lowered look I ran initially with black steelies with domed caps but changed to EMPI 8s instead, a look I love on my Beetle. My Dad helped with the fitting of the BMW 3 Series leather seats which are a massive change from the stock seats this ‘Standard’ model once had.”
Thanks for the information Paul.
23/10/19 UPDATE from Padraic, the new owner of 104 HIU: “Car is now in Galway. I bought it from Paul a few years ago. Got its 1600 engine running sweet and drove it for a few years. It’s currently off the road as the master cylinder failed.”
