Info

In a time when our roads are crammed with modern cars and vans, many of them being electric or hybrid, it’s a welcome surprise to firstly hear an aircooled Volkswagen engine and to then look up and see that the engine is powering a rare Split Screen Type 2.

I photographed ZV 52945 in Castletroy back in September 2023 as this fantastic RHD Splittie drove down the road towards me. I can’t remember the last time that I saw a Type 2 Split VW in the wild as they say. Unless it’s the morning of a classic car show or perhaps there is a wedding on in the area, they are just not seen on the road these days. This particular Type 2 wasn’t heading to a show as it was a weekday and it certainly wasn’t dressed in wedding ribbons so not on chauffeur duty for a happy couple, so basing my conclusion on nothing more than it being close to work start time, this rare aircooled beauty may have been be used as a daily driver, or at least a sometimes daily driver, used on reasonably dry days only.

This particular Split Window Bus is owned by a lady by the name of Martha and if you are on Instagram you can follow her @thatsalovelyvwcampervan where you can see her solo adventures across Europe. Back at home now and Martha is offering her Split Bus for wedding chauffeur work to help fund the next European journey. At the start I said that it was so refreshing to occasionally see an aircooled VW on the road, be it on the way to a show, wedding or even a somewhat daily driver but when you see the miles that Martha covers in her Splittie you will see that she really is the exception to the rule. Well done Martha, you brightened up my day when I saw your Bus on the road.
