Alison Cassidy: “Our uncle Wally Cassidy VW Beetle. He sadly died (aged only 26) following an accident at work not long after this picture was taken.”

Niall Cassidy: “YZE776 was bought in Bolands of Clondalkin in July of 1964. My father brought the car back in to the dealership in 1977 and Jimmy Boland remembered selling the car to who he thought was my Dad but was obviously Wally. The reason why he remembered was because the IRA had organised a successful escape from Portlaoise prison that day and loads of Garda vehicles where screeching up and down the Naas Road that day. Believe it or not Wally had it on HP which was a new thing back then. VW were one of the first in Ireland to introduce this payment method. It was to facilitate the “working man” to have his own car. My Dad took over the payments (after a bit of family turbulence) of 24 quid a month. When he sold the car he traded it against a FIAT 127. The Beetle hadn’t reached classic status at that stage so he got 350 quid off the Fiat.”
