Info

Don’t you just love the 1980s custom style? The Porsche themed kit was popular back in the day, so popular in fact, that Volksworld Magazine had a Turbo kit as the main prize in a competition. Sadly, the amount of fibreglass used to make the kit was equalled only to the amount of fibreglass used on the ‘restoration’ of many of these customised Beetles. Not all of them of course, but many were first cars and with that comes the desire to create something unique, often at the price of safety or a proper restoration. We’ve all been there, fix it up quickly so you have something, anything at all to drive! Beetles were 10 a penny and really had no value, even some 1950s VWs such as Splits, Ovals and Barndoor Buses. Oh how times have changed!

This particular Porsche Turbo kitted Beetle looks to be well put together, and spent a lot of time with its owner in Tipperary. We don’t know what ever became of it but we do know that while the owner drove it he absolutely loved his 1976 Waterford registered Beetle. Incidentally, this Beetle left the MDL facility as a 1200N Base Model Beetle in Miami Blue (L51C) in May 1976, bound for O’Brien’s of Tallow.
