This image is a still from a video that was uploaded onto the Dublin Down Memory Lane Facebook page. The original owner of the video is unknown but we will happily credit them if we can get their details. We watched the video and loved it. This Beetle was seen driving along the seafront and we screengrabbed it. It may not be the best possible quality, well, we know it isn’t but it’s another Beetle to add to the Census and more importantly, it is one of the rare VW Ireland-only two-tone Beetle. Yes, VW themselves did two-tone paint, but not in the same way we did so it’s always great to be able to record them when we find them.
We have seen a number of these two-tone Beetles and we have were able to successfully research some of these Beetles in recent times, in fact, we have one going into our book on Volkswagen in Ireland but as I said, it’s always nice to see one from back in the day as they were rare then so even rarer now. This 1200 Beetle Deluxe was assembled in Dublin in June 1960 and was registered the following month in Dublin. The combination of Pearl White (L87) under Ruby Red (L456) combined with fresh chrome hubcaps, bumpers, door handles and trim must have really made this Beetle quite eye-catching on the streets of Dublin, especially on a sunny day like this was when it was captured by the sea.
