Model information

1600TL Fastback and VW1600TL

Info

LZI 141, first registered in January 1966 in Dublin was an early example of the new VW1600TL model, or “Type3 Fastback” as it’s more commonly known these days. Being from before the 1967 facelift era, it was what we now consider to be an early model within the Type3 range. However, the 1600TL itself was considered a revolution in Irish Type3 circles as it basically replaced the older 1500S model or “Notchback” as we call it these days. The poor old 1500S/Notchback was short-lived in Ireland, only being available from 1964 to 1965.

The increased engine capacity from 1500cc to 1600cc made the new 1600TL the fastest VW ever available in Ireland, back in 1965. But speed and comfort cost money and when introduced, the 1600TL cost the princely sum of £865 which was expensive when compared to the old reliable 1200 Beetle, which cost just £595 at the same time.
