Joe Dempsey is the man to thank for submitting this photo. Joe spotted the Donegal registered Beetle while enjoying the Mountbellew Vintage Show in County Galway at the end of July 2018.
The 1200N Base Model Beetle was originally finished in Phoenix Red (L32K) before being sent from MDL to D&S Motors in Monaghan. It was bought from there in August 1977 by its first owner in Donegal, hence the ZP registration. By the date of the registration, this is one of the last off the line as such for Irish assembled Beetles so a very nice car for someone to own.
From the photo Joe sent us, HZP 316 looks to have been restored at some point and more importantly it appears to be in the ownership of an enthusiast who keeps their Beetle in excellent condition.
UPDATE 24-5-2021: Fred Dean very kindly submitted a photo of HZP 316 that he took on The Green in Castlebar, County Mayo back in 2012, March 18th to be exact. This Beetle would have been part of the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Castlebar. If you get a chance, check out Fred’s photo collection and I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed.
