Of all the photos that Darren O’Rourke of the Original Irish Aircooled VW Facebook group has submitted, this has got to be our favourite. The owner clearly loved their Beetle because it is loaded with rare accessories, well, certainly for the Irish market anyway. The Oval Window Beetle has a roofrack fitted, a radio and centre mounted aerial and raised silver digit ACE style number plates.
This Oval Window Deluxe Beetle was registered in Tipperary South Riding in July 1954. From what we can make out from the photo, it’s possible that it was finished in Strato Silver (L227) which would be correct for June and July 1954 production. When you consider this was, as Volkswagen described, a Beetle Deluxe, adding those accessories would have made this a very unique Beetle in whatever town or village it was based in. This mother and her son must have been the talk of the town!
