Model information

1200 Beetle Deluxe and Sliding Head Beetle

Info

This photo of CZC 62 shows a real rarity. First of all, you can plainly see that CZC 62 was a Deluxe Beetle with a major defining feature that set it apart from almost all other Irish assembled Beetles. The folding fabric sunroof was an expensive option in its day and considering the damp Irish climate, it was a bold move on the part of the purchaser! Back in the 1950s and 60s, the folding roof was referred to as a “sliding head” but more recently it has become known as a “ragtop” in the modern parlance.

CZC 62 was evidently used for a bit of touring. The “EIR” plate on the rear bumper shows that it left Ireland for foreign shores at least once and that unique half-roof rack would have given valuable extra stowage space for baggage. We’ve never seen a ragtop-specific roof rack like this so we assume it may have been a generic/universal roof or boot rack that the owner adapted to work on the rear portion of the Beetle roof and to avoid the sun roof.

Incidentally, CZC 62 was a March 1961 Beetle, first registered in Dublin. It looks like it may have been a two-tone car too, with the wings and side panels being a different colour to the roof, decklid and bonnet. Two-tone paint was another extra-cost option from the Irish factory.
