Bay Window Minibus
I count myself as one of the fortunate people to have had the opportunity to get to know Mattie O’Sullivan before his untimely death. Despite my teenage years when I first met Mattie he gave me as much time as I needed to look at all of the VWs in his collection, and that took some time!
He was a very generous man with his advice as well as time and this day, July 6th 1990, was no different. On almost every trip as a young teenager to stay with my aunt and cousins in Dublin I would hop on the bus and head out to see Mattie in Europa Cars in Blackrock, the garage that he managed. There was always something really interesting going on in the workshop and Mattie would take the time to show me the work and explain the process.
Another favourite was when Mattie would take me to his house to see both his and his childrens’ collection of vintage aircooled VWs. Always in super condition and always the best of the best including Ovals and Split Beetles. This Bay Window Minibus was one of the fleet on that day and it was in immaculate condition. The Bay Window had been registered in Wicklow in March of 1978 but looked better that July day in 1990 than it did leaving MDL in February 1978!
