Model information
1302S and 1302S Beetle
Info
Back in 1972 this was the top of the line in Beetles. It had a 1600cc engine, disc brakes and radical new suspension, although you would struggle to think that when you see how it looked back in 2019. The poor 1302S was sitting in a scrapyard waiting to be broken but the owner of the yard did say that if he got enough he might let it go. I hope someone took it on.
Unlike many VWs supplied to the Irish market which were on a CKD or Complete Knock Down basis, this 1302 was built in Belgium and imported as a complete Beetle. This was common practice with some models, the 1302 models being one such model.
Once the Beetle was processed at VW HQ on the Naas Road, this 1302 was sent to VW Sales Ltd on the North Circular Road in Dublin. It was from there that the deal was done with its first owner at the end of July 1972 and this once Gentian Blue (L51B) Beetle was registered to that owner’s address in Dublin.
At some point in its life it had a repaint, possibly more than one and a set of Centreline style alloys were fitted in place of the stock steel rims and hubcaps.
Where is it now? Well, we’re hoping you will tell us it’s in your garage and the restoration is about to start. We live in hope when it comes to these old classic VWs!
