Model information

1302LS Beetle

Info

If you were passing MDL on the Naas Road in July 1971 you may have seen this 1302LS Beetle driving out through the gates and heading for PJ Woods in Clane, County Kildare. PJ Woods, or the Central Garage Clane as it was also known, was the selling dealer for this rare Beetle. I say rare Beetle because even then, a 1302LS was a rare sight on our roads and they’re even rarer now!

I was lucky to see this particular 1302LS in Martin Murray’s Eirespares Garage in May 2021. The once Gemini Blue Metallic (L96E) Beetle looked to be very original, apart from a repaint in a similar shade of metallic blue. The front seats have been reupholstered but the rest of the interior, including the oft worn carpets, were in great condition. The original 1600cc engine was still in place and running perfectly. This Beetle was having a mechanical refresh in anticipation of some road use which is the first time in almost 5 years that 4362 ZA will be driven on Irish roads.

I guess it just shows that there are still so many aircooled VWs still out there, sitting in storage, waiting to see the tarmac once more. Keep an eye out for this Beetle this summer as I’m sure the owner will be looking forward to covering many miles.
