Info

Anyone who was at any of the Kilcommon Festivals will instantly recognise the scene and maybe even the Beetle. This Irish assembled Beetle looked nothing like this when it left MDL on the Naas Road bound for Wicklow in April 1977. At some point in the very early 1990s the owner modified their Beetle from stock to eye-popping!

The standard colour was gone and replaced with a peppermint green shade. Before the new paint went on the trim and the number plate housing on the engine lid were removed. The Europa bumpers were replaced with blade bumpers and a set of EMPI style 8 spoke rims found their way under the wings. All new Cal Look smooth window rubbers, tinted rear lights, colour coded mirrors, a drop in ride height, one piece windows and solenoid doors saw the car finished. This was a pretty tricked out car for its time. Given the difficulty in getting custom parts in Ireland back then makes this car even cooler!

UPDATE 03-03-2023: Thanks to Roger O’Sullivan for sending us this photo showing the front of the Beetle. Roger does not know who took the photo or where it was taken but we thank him for sending it to us. Much appreciated.
