1977 Base Model Beetle
This July 1977 registered Base Model Beetle was submitted by Ronan O’Day from Kerry. Ronan has owned his Beetle since 2008 and has restored it but as he says himself, it’s an ongoing process that must take second place to family and work. Ronan replaced the engine about 3 years ago for another 1200cc unit. Next job on the list is carpet and get it back on the road.
Update 10-5-19 – Submission by the new owner: This Beetle, registration 339 WZA has recently been purchased by the owner of 341 WZA. Not alone are both cars within 2 digits in their registration numbers, but they are both within 2 digits of their chassis numbers. Both cars were originally registered to Motor Distributors for 12 months as lease cars and then sold through the Motor Distributors’ dealer network.
Work is currently underway returning this car back to original Kafer Beetle (1200N) spec. A replacement interior is being fitted after the floor pan has been repainted in black. The heating system and pedal assembly needs attention along with the brakes and the car will then get a full service.
Previous work of fitting a new floor pan and spare wheel well has all being done to a very good standard and bar some light rust bubbling on the rain channels and front quarter panels, this is going to be an excellent driveable 42 year old car. Amazingly, car registration 340 WZA still survives to this day and is on the road in Kerry completing the trio of 339-340-341 WZA. The fact that they have all been on the road since 1977 proves the reliability of the humble Beetle!
Update 25-10-23: I was contacted by the current owner in Cork to say that he has decided to sell his Beetle as he is not getting to use it as much as he would like. I am waiting on current photos and pricing but if you are looking for an Irish assembled Beetle with provenance then this might be the Beetle for you. As soon as I have more information, I will update this listing.
