1200 Beetle Deluxe

Info

For the weekend we decided to upload a pair of ZD registered Beetles that were registered very close together in March & April 1972; 275 ZD & 162 ZD

This 1200 Beetle Deluxe left the MDL plant after its quality inspection and made its way to Modern Motors in Crumlin where it was sold from. It was then registered on March 27th 1972.

We’re not sure whether 162 ZD was ordered with some choice accessories but what we do know is that it had them when it was in Limerick. The accessories included highback seats, overriders on the front and rear bumpers as well as the accessory vent trim under the rear window. The mudflaps were an off the shelf modern addition.

Unlike 275 ZD, 162 ZD made its way out of Dublin and headed for Limerick at some point in its life. It was driven by a man in Castletroy in County Limerick for a period before being sold to an owner in Shannon we believe.

I photographed the Beetle in the garage of Tony Cross, a man who served his time with VW and then went on to open up his own garage, keeping a huge number of Beetles on the road for their loyal owners in counties Limerick, Clare and Tipperary. I think Tony had repainted the Beetle in its original Toga White L90C and it was back for regular maintenance work when it was captured on film.
