Model information

Type 3 Variant and Type III

Info

I don’t know much about this fantastic Type 3 Variant other than what I remember from seeing at the Kilcommon VW Show in Tipperary. It was a US spec model so it was LHD. Perhaps it was an ex US embassy car or a personal import, it’s all just guesses right now. It looked to be in excellent condition and even had the all red US spec rear lights.

The Delta Green (L610) paintwork really came alive in the sunshine that day in Kilcommon. The Variant, or Squareback as it was called in America was registered in Dublin in April 1968 although we think this is a 1965 model.

We’d love to know more about this very special model and how it managed to get from the USA to Ireland at a time when personal imports were beyond the average classic car enthusiast.

UPDATE July 2020 Beetle.ie: We just received some photos of this Variant as it sits now and some information which fills in the blanks on why it is LHD. “The story behind the car is it was specially ordered in Germany for a senior executive of Aer Lingus. He had a previous one in white and right hand drive and could not take to it as he was German. After 8 weeks the green car was ordered in left hand drive. This particular car is fuel injected. When he returned to Germany the car was sold in the open market in the early ’70s. Currently the engine has a whole in the lock. It is sitting in a field in Co. Louth after being taken out of dry storage two years ago. The current owner lives in Australia with his daughter. Any chrome missing off of it is in the boot. I first saw this car in 1993 in Ballyhayes, Co. Cavan in a Volkswagen Golf GTi breakers yard. Then again last year sitting in a field in Co. Louth.”
