Model information
Marathon Beetle and World Champion Beetle
Info
This is a rare find in old photos, a previously unknown (to the Beetle.ie research team at least!) Irish-Assembled “World-Champion” Beetle, more commonly known as the “Marathon Beetle”. Despite the fact that the photograph is in black and white, the pale hue and those Limited Edition Lemmerz wheels make it an unmistakeable example of the World Champion Beetle. 1330 ZH also features a set of rear mud flaps, which were an extra-cost option at the time.
Interestingly, it has quite a late registration number, most of the Dublin-registered World Champions that we have discovered so far have been in the “ZE” registration series. However, the date of the reg tallies with the information we found at the factory, the very last of the series were assembled during September 1972. 1330 ZH dates from October 1972 so that ties in.
Evidence of these Special Edition Beetles is scarce enough and the discovery of 1330 ZH brings the total of known Irish World Champions to only 25 out of 300 built!! Research is always continuing though so hopefully that number will increase over time.
