Info

Our first VW was a 1973 1300S Beetle, 1982-ZI, which we used as a daily driver and weekend skiver.
We were out for a meal in Joels on the Naas Road and spotted it in a garage beside the restaurant. We were driving a Fiat Uno at the time and did a straight swap for the Beetle.
We drove it for many years and when we started a family we decided that it would be a good idea to upgrade to a camper. So we sold the Beetle which was a very difficult thing to do as we had many happy memories with it.

Off down to the Credit Union we went to get a few bob and start the search. We found Bertie in Surrey.
We changed the wheels and added disc brakes up front, replaced the engine for a reconditioned unit and sorted the interior so it would work for four of us. We went on many camping trips in it like this. A few years in we decided to paint it and do a few custom mods while we were at it.

Little did we know that day we went for a meal in Joels, that VW’s would be such a big part of our lives.

thanks for sharing your lovely story Martin & Hilary. I’ve included a clipping from a VolksWorld magazine from the mid-2000s featuring your fantastic custom splitty!
