Type 3 Fastback and Type III

On our way to Killorglin in County Kerry with both of our mothers, myself and my cousin Aidan spotted this Type 3 Fastback in a yard in Milltown. We asked them to stop so we could look at the ‘old Volkswagen’ and they very kindly did. As young teenagers we loved finding old VWs out and about and thankfully our mothers obliged.
The January 1973 Kerry registered Fastback looked like it had been involved in an impact and then every useful part was removed from it so perhaps these parts went on to keep another Type 3 on the road which was a good thing because even then, back in the 1980s, parts for Type 3s were not easily sourced.
Aidan recalls; “while we were there we met a man who claimed to have four Type 3s in a field. We will never know if he did or just made it up. The car remained visible from the road for a few more years before disappearing sometime around 1990. I think it’s safe to assume it was scrapped”
