This Beetle was Shane Arnold’s pride and joy many moons ago and was the Beetle that ignited his passion for all things Beetle. The Kilkenny reg Beetle found its way to Carlow, to the Arnold’s home, with this photo being taken in 1988.

The Texas Yellow (L10B) Beetle was a 1300 model, assembled in MDL’s plant on the Naas Road in Dublin back in 1973. This was the Beetle that Shane remembers so much and it’s the one that he wishes he never sold, and let’s face it, we all have one of those!

Shane personalised his Beetle with white lettering on the tyres, as was the done thing back in the day. It also looks like the Beetle wore 5.5″ wheels, certainly on the rear anyway.

From Shane himself: “Bought in 1987 in Nurney, County Kildare by my mam for £600. We had it for two years. I was 15 when I took this one and only photo of YIP 568 after a service, full valet and after I painted the tyre writing white. I drove that Beetle into my inter cert in Tullow school for the week Cathal with no license, insurance or feck all. It ended up at Bray train station a for three months when she left for the UK. I got it towed back to Carlow and it was sold off for £300 engine was wrecked though at that stage but still loved it.”
