Model information
1200 Beetle Deluxe
Info
Mark Lynch’s late dad’s 1969 Beetle in Stillorgan. Assembled in March 1969 on the Naas Road assembly line, this 1200 Beetle Deluxe was finished in Sand Beige (L568). I have a soft spot for this model as my first Beetle was also a 1969 Sand Beige 1200 Beetle Deluxe, although it was nowhere near as good as this Beetle I’m sad to say!
This fantastic Beetle was the pride and joy of the late Peter Lynch. Peter owned this Beetle for almost thirty years and at one point, probably over twenty years ago, I saw Peter’s Beetle out on the driveway and called to see if it was for sale but there was no answer. I’m pretty sure the answer would have been a defiant ‘no’ had Peter answered the door because he really enjoyed his Beetle, and the proof if proof were needed, was that he cherished WZO 620 for almost three decades.
Peter’s Beetle was assembled in Dublin in March 1969 and rolled off the assembly line wearing a shiny shade of Sand Beige or Sea Sand Beige as it was also referred to in the Irish records. The Beetle was finished in Deluxe spec so wore a full complement of chrome trim. One of the team from Denis Mahony’s VW dealership travelled over from Glasnevin to the MDL site on the Naas Road to collect this Beetle as this was going to be registered as a demo car for Denis Mahony’s. WZO 620 was the registration number that was allocated to this chassis number and by April 22nd, the new number plates had been fitted and this Beetle was on the road.
Denis Mahony’s held this Beetle in stock for a period before offering this Beetle for sale. The happy purchaser was based in Blackrock and held onto WZO 620 until Peter purchased it in 1996, so it’s a great sign when two of the three owners held onto their Beetle for quite some time, meaning that this Beetle was not only minded exceptionally well but also lived a relatively easy life.
