1200 Beetle Deluxe

I photographed this Beetle at the 1992 Kilcommon Festival and it certainly grabbed attention of all the show goers that day. This Beetle had spent quite some time in the owner’s garage being transformed from a humble 1200 Beetle Deluxe into something quite extraordinary. Gone was the Sea Sand (L568) colour it left MDL with in 1969 and in its place was a fresh coat of metallic purple paint. All four wings were binned because the Porsche Turbo kit came with fibreglass wings and bumpers but the owner didn’t stop there because they also installed a fibreglass Split Window kit.
If the Porsche kit doesn’t point to the custom scene of the late 1980s then the chrome Zoom Tube will! They were everywhere at the time and gave a boom to a spluttery 1200cc engine if nothing else.
The inspector at the end of the MDL line couldn’t have imagined when he signed WZO 550 over to VW Leasing in March 1969 just how different this car would look in the years to come.
