Model information

1200 Beetle and Custom

Info

This was a long-since unloved beetle when I got it. There was no interior to speak of and it had been rattle-can painted in matt black. Generally, it was quite rusty and would have been a big restoration project. So instead of restoring it, I embraced the dereliction and had some fun with it!
I built a 6″ narrowed adustable beam, drop spindles, disk front brakes, notched the rear spring plates and lowered it until it was scraping the ground. I got the original 1200 motor running with just a squirt of oil down the spark plug holes, a new set of plugs, points and condensor. With a drop of fresh petrol, she fired right up!! After fitting a set of genuine 1970s Wolfrace Slot Mag wheels I brought it on a trailer to the Limerick VW show, 2017 and it attracted lots of attention. During my time I never intended to put it on the road, it was more of an art installation!!
I sold it on the following year and Tommy Quigley from Co. Wexford repaired the rust and got it on the road, putting his own spin on it along the way.
