Irish assembled 1200N Beetles are the new rarity, in fact, any Irish assembled Beetle is a rarity these days but in particular, 1200N models. The reason is that they were often seen as a cheap car, which they were, but cheap as in cheap to buy and replace. As a result, many were used until they fell apart and were scrapped. Nobody would ever have imagined that the lowest price, lowest spec, basic version of the Beetle would ever achieve classic car status, so when they reached the end of their useful life, they were parked up and used for parts before being crushed.
This lovely 1200N Beetle managed to make it to at least 2011 as the only photo we have of it was taken in Clones, County Monaghan back in 2011.
An Irish assembled Beetle, this 1200N or Base Model Beetle was finished in Phoenix Red (L32K) before being sent to Brady’s of Arva on 26th July 1977. The Beetle was not registered until 30th August 1977 to its first owner in Monaghan. After that is a blank, until it was spotted in Clones. It looks to have been very well minded over the years, the black bumpers have been replaced with chrome versions and the rear window vent is now adorned with some aluminium trim. Hubcaps now sit in place of the basic model centre cap. We can see that there is also an Eircooled VW Car Club sticker in the rear window so the owner, current or past, is a VW enthusiast. Hopefully it is still being used and loved all these years later.
