1200 Beetle Deluxe

Info

Despite what people think, black VWs weren’t as common here in Ireland as we may have previously thought, especially as we moved from the mid 1960s through to the end of assembly so it’s quite unusual to see a black 1970s Beetle.

This particular Beetle was photographed by Thomas Flanagan at the Thrill on the Hill event in Waterford many years ago. Tom snapped PIO 265 as it was parked up on display. We don’t know much about PIO 265 other than it was assembled in Dublin in June 1971 and was sold to its first owner in Kildare in July 1971. The Black (L41) Beetle was a 1200cc model and finished in Deluxe specification. During a repaint, the original black wing beading was replaced with white wing beading which was a common upgrade at the time. The interior looks to have been updated too with seats from a more modern car that included headrests, all have been upholstered in black & white.

Thanks Thomas for submitting this Beetle to the Census.
