1200N Base Model Beetle

Info

Come back the days of modifying VWs!

Patrick Lynch from the Eircooled Facebook page submitted this brilliant photo of his old Beetle  that came complete with whale tail bootlid spoiler, alloy wheels with spinners and the fibreglass bumpers with the extended lip. This Beetle was cool was back in the day and would certainly have grabbed attention on the road. Patrick doesn’t know if his old Beetle survived so if you know we’d love to be able to pass the information on to Patrick.

This particular Beetle was a 1200N or Base Model Beetle so had the short headlining, card door panels with no pockets, no through-flow ventilation, a ‘Standard’ steering wheel, metal dash and limited sound deadening and carpets. It was as the name suggested, a basic model Beetle.

Basic it may have been when it was assembled at MDL but the paint colour was anything but boring, being Rally Yellow (L10A). It was registered in May 1976 after being sold from O’Reilly’s in Longford.

UPDATE Kevin McGonnell 21-6-24: Hi, I now own FIX 353; I have it about 4 years, having bought it off Eircooled member and all round gent Tim. It was for sale on the site so no ‘mystery’ as to where it ended up. It lost its whale tail and ended up an 80s/90s style Cal Looker with EMPI 8 spokes. It now has a rebuilt 1300cc engine, but it needs bodywork as old repairs were swelling underskin when I bought it. The reg ruled my head on this purchase. I have a number of projects ahead of it but I’ve gathered parts like doors and repair panels.
