1200 Beetle Deluxe
Info
When John Burke photographed this 1963 1200 Deluxe Beetle in West Cork there wasn’t much left of the original car. It certainly didn’t look anything like it did when it was assembled in MDL’s plant on the Naas Road in Dublin. For one thing, much of the Ruby Red (L456) had faded in the sunshine, so much so that the primer was now visible in places. Quite a lot of the wonderful early 1960s features were missing and anything that was left was beyond saving.
I suppose it was like any old car left to rot away in a field, with much of it having rotted away and any parts worth saving had been removed over the years. I’m sure the first owner couldn’t imagine their beautiful new shiny red Beetle looking anything like this when they proudly drove EZB 43 out of the dealership in Cork way back in January 1963.
