Info

On February 14th 2026, Darren O’Rourke of the Original Irish Aircooled Facebook group posted a period photo of a 1964 Beetle. Nothing unusual there I hear you say, and you would be right but what makes it unusual is the fact that the photograph of this particular Beetle came out of a London photo archive. Was this Beetle now permanently based in London or was it only on a flying visit? We don’t know that but this Beetle was certainly well minded in its new London surroundings.

This Beetle was registered in late July 1965, making it one of the last of the small window models, as the following month, the 1965 model was introduced which had larger windscreen, improved visibility all-round thanks to larger rear and side glass too. The fly window was narrowed, allowing for larger door glass and thinner door top frames. CZH 637 was wearing a set of ACE number plates, telling us that this owner was willing to pay up for high end number plates and therefore, really cherished their new Beetle. The Beetle also had rear stone guards fitted to protect the bottom of the rear wings and it was washed and polished. We can’t make out the tax disc date but we can see that it is an Irish disc.

As it stands, that’s all we know about this gorgeous Black (L41) 1964 Beetle but, stranger things have happened and you never know, some more information may surface about this Beetle.

Thanks as always to Darren O’Rourke for sharing this photo with us and allowing up to add it to the Beetle.ie Census.
