Marathon Beetle
Info
It’s not every day that we come across a Marathon Beetle. In fact, they are one of the hardest of the Special Edition Beetles to find here in Ireland. This one we only managed to locate recently when going through the archives.
Obviously it had been heavily modified at the time I took this photo at the Beetle’s Reunion in Limerick because it would have left the VW production line in Dublin wearing a coat of Diamond Blue (L50B) or in this case, a Corbel colour as this paint was sourced locally and not the metallic blue paint it was finished in.
The spoked Lemmerz steel wheels with chromed hexagonal centre caps were long since gone and in their place a ‘modern’ set of alloys. The original engine had been replaced with a 1600cc unit and loud Kadron exhaust to help people hear this Beetle just in case you didn’t happen to see the massive fibreglass rear spoiler and the oversized bumpers!
Sold from Europa Cars in Blackrock, this Marathon Beetle was registered in Dublin on September 22nd 1972.
