Bay Window Panel Van and Type 2 Bay Window
Info
The note on the back of this photo simply reads: “The Banger 518JZC heads off on tow. May all the bad luck go with it!!”…………I think it’s fair to say the owner wasn’t a massive fan of his old Bay Window Panel Van!
Registered in Dublin in November 1977 but wasn’t recorded on the system until the 12th of December 1977. Apart from that and the fact that it was somewhat unloved by its previous owner, very little else is known of its history.
By today’s standard this was a very restorable and desirable VW but back in the 1990s when this photo was taken it was a totally different story. There was a time (not so long ago sadly) when you would buy a Bay Window only for the engine and scrap the rest. Sacrilege today but back then things were very different and if you could rock up to a show with a 1600cc engine in the back of your once 1200cc Beetle you were a god!
I can possibly take a guess that this Taiga Green Type 2 ended up in the scrapyard not long after this photo was taken. I’d love to find out otherwise but it’s unlikely.
