1200 Base Model Beetle

Info

This late 1977 Beetle was really eye catching back in the 1990’s but if you look at it, there’s very little done to it, it was just clever use of paint that made this Beetle look more modified than it was.

It was a Basic or Standard model but Vinny Derham’s decision to add the black paint to the rear half made it stand out from all the other Beetles at the time. A plucky little 1200cc engine powered this Beetle but it was a really good one as it seemed to power it along at the same speed as Vinny’s mates who had 1600cc engines in their Beetles!

Lemmerz sport Beetle rims finished off the look perfectly and proved you didn’t need to spend a fortune on your Beetle to make it stand out from the crowd back then, and even today, decades later, the same approach could be taken for the same impact.

Vinny was part of a Clare & Limerick based group of Beetle enthusiasts who would usually get together on a Sunday and explore the local areas, nearly always finding an old Beetle somewhere along the route. I had the pleasure of being on some of those cruises and took these photos on one trip through County Clare. I was just a little bit too young to get insurance on my own Beetle so I would tag along with some really great guys who weren’t afraid to use their Beetles in all weathers and on all roads.
