Model information
1303 Beetle
Info
133 PI was a 1973 1303 Beetle I bought from a man in Passage East in Waterford in July 2003, as a donor car for a project I was building at the time. I paid just €850 for it at the time and it was a fully functional, driving car in reasonably good condition. I drove it home from Passage East to Kilkenny and onwards to the Mosney car show the next day. Hard to think of getting a fully driving 1303 for €850 these days!
The car was originally dark green, as witnessed by paint under the white top coat. The reg was from Cork City in March 1976 but the car was earlier. I never found out for sure but the logical explanation is that it was an early import from the UK, being RHD.
However, in its original form it was never meant to be a driver for me. I wanted to build a Subaru Powered German-Looker and it was always ear-marked to be the basis for that. I sold the 1300 engine to a buddy and helped him fit it to his ’73 1300, 20 years later that engine is still going! I swapped the gearbox for a genuine VW “bulge” rear apron.
Eventually, sadly, the project was abandoned. The body was sold on to a man from Cork and the chassis was sold with the log book to another man from Galway.
