Nova Kit Car

Info

It’s not often we get to add a kit car like this Nova to the Beetle.ie Census which is a shame because there aren’t enough custom VWs or kit cars being done these days. There was a time when shows were packed with cars created from people’s imaginations but sadly not so much now.

Thankfully Jim McCallum submitted these photos of his friend Damien Mac Tiarnain’s Nova. Dublin based Damien is working hard to create his dream Nova and we can’t wait to see the finished car because this midway progress report was enough to grab our attention – and hold it!

The Nova was originally built in England and is based on a 1968 Beetle. Damien bought the Nova in Portrush back in 2006 and set about rebuilding it, with the first job being to repaint it in a colour of his choice which will be familiar to any Subaru fans! The Subaru blue is a striking hue and will accentuate the sleek lines of the Nova when it’s moving through the streets of Dublin. Damien hasn’t stopped at just a paint change. Oh no, Damien’s gone with the ‘go big or go home’ approach because his next modification has been the most fun/crazy/insane/bonkers modification but we love it because he’s gone and fitted a Porsche 3.6 litre engine into the back. That’s right, Damien has fitted an almighty powerhouse at the back of a lightweight Beetle chassis which is covered by nothing more than an even lighter fibreglass body! This Nova is going to be the most fun on four wheels anywhere on this island, and not only that but we’re sure you’ll be able to hear his Nova from anywhere on this island……….and possibly his passenger’s screams!!!!!

His last modification seems almost tame in comparison to the Porsche engine install but it’ll transform the front of the car and is a really clever modification. Damien is currently modifying the nose so he can fit pop-up headlights from a 1990’s era Mazda 323f .

We wish Damien the best of luck in getting his Nova finished and can’t wait to hear this fire up!
