Type 3 Variant

Info

Like most VW enthusiasts, we love a good story and an interesting history which is one of the reasons we were drawn to this Variant. Well, that and the fact that it is in fantastic condition.

When we first spotted this 9173 VW Variant it was the excellent rust free condition that attracted us but when we got closer we could see that this may be a very original Variant and not overly restored. The Variant is an Australian market model, the Type 3 badge on the front wings is unique to Australia. There is also an Aussie VW dealer sticker on the back glass.

I believe this Variant was based in Sydney initially but what was intriguing to us about this rust free beauty was its back story, or should I say, it’s what we wanted to know. Was it shipped directly to Ireland from Oz or did it make its way through a number of other countries? Was it shipped in for sale and a profit or did someone love it enough in Oz to take it with them when they left?

We’d love to know because there just has to be an interesting story to this Variant. If you know then please let us know.

We took these photos at the 2016 Obama Plaza Show which is run by the Nenagh Classic Car Club.
