This poor old Beetle looks as down and out as any classic car can be. It does represent the end of life that so many old Volkswagens faced in Ireland as so many were simply parked in fields to fill gaps in ditches. That might have been the last purposeful job this old VW did before slowly returning to mother earth, one rusty panel at a time.
When Roger O’Sullivan photographed this battered old 1973 Beetle, it had already been in that spot for quite some time. Having already had its windows smashed, panels kicked in and wheels removed, there was no way this Beetle was ever likely to see the inside of a Beetle enthusiast’s garage for a full nut and bolt restoration, at best, it may have offered up some parts but the sad truth is that this Texas Yellow (L10B) 1300 Beetle was nothing more than a ditch filler for its owner.
