This 1972 Crossover High-Top Panel Van was first registered to the ESB on a HZM (Galway) registration.
The second owner, Anthony, converted it to a camper in the 1980’s and owned it until 2007 when I bought it. The factory colour is dark green but it was painted in ESB colours of yellow and grey before hitting the road in 1972. I had it for a few years but Anthony bought it back with the intention of restoring it but unfortunately that never materialised.
I spotted it for sale twice since, the last time was on facebook sometime in 2018. I would love to see it restored with its original ESB livery. Maybe some day.
*UPDATE 29-1-19*: Thanks to Tommy Walsh for sending in the following information which brings the story right up to date. Hopefully the new owner will get in touch to let us know their plans for this interesting and rare VW.
“I bought and sold this van last year (2018) after it had been in storage in Cork for a number of years. It was purchased from me by a man from Galway who wanted it due to it having a Galway registration. I believe it is being restored this year”
