Model information

1200N Beetle

Info

This was originally a Base model Beetle, built in MDL’s Naas Road factory in 1977 and sold new in Dublin.

In 1987 Eoin Honan bought it and proceeded to do a body off restoration and modify it in the Cal Look style. Bright yellow paint, colour coded ATS alloys, engine, running boards, door handles and shaved bonnet were all part of the look. This Beetle was groundbreaking at the time and appeared on TV shows and in magazines. It always grabbed attention wherever it went. There was an enormous amount of money spent on the restoration and modification back in 1987, something in the region of £9,000 so you know it was special.

Having gone through many owners and dubious repairs over the years it disappeared but I managed to track this iconic Beetle down in 2012 in a barn in Newtownmountkennedy. After a long and thorough body-off restoration 307-EZC has been restored back to its 1987 Cal Look style, complete with the original interior and ATS rims from 1987. As with its 1987 restoration, no expense was spared in this restoration. Everything has been replaced or restored. Nothing has been left to chance. From the smallest rubber washer to the new disc brakes and steering wheel, the sandblasted beam and gearbox to the many NOS parts sourced for this restoration, it has truly been a labour of love.

This 1977 Cal Look Beetle was featured in Volksworld Magazine as part of the Staff Projects section, has been on display at the 2017 Volksworld Show and it is due to be featured in Volksworld Magazine very soon. It has also been featured in Ireland’s Retro Classic Magazine (January-March 2019).

Photos: Within the attached photos you will see a selection of photos from taken in 1989, some ‘as found’ photos from 2012 and as it is now, a fully restored Beetle, including the magazine shots and photos from the 2017 Volksworld Show.
