Model information

1300S, Power Pack Beetle, and Special Edition

Info

This is a one owner, low mileage, unmodified 1300S/Power Pack beetle.

It languished on a driveway in Dartry, Co. Dublin since 1999 after its owner passed away. I bought it from the late owner’s wife in 2017. It took a full day’s worth of work to get the brakes unstuck, the wheels changed to ones with tyres that held air and winched onto a trailer through the narrow gate.
It’s now in dry storage while parts are being collected for a full, stock restoration.
While it’s in quite poor condition from being neglected for so long, it’s a perfect example of an Ireland-only Special Edition model: the Power Pack Beetle.

The Power Pack Beetle is closely related to the European 1300S and UK “GT Beetle”, being a 1300-based, torsion beam beetle but fitted with a 1600 twin port engine, high ratio gearbox, disk brakes on front, special “Sports” steel wheels, a heated rear screen, padded dashboard and large “elephant’s foot” rear lamps. They came only in one colour: Tomato Red and Ireland received only 300 of the model. Very few have survived to this day and almost none are completely unmodified so it was a lucky find to come across this one. Being so rare, it deserves a full, stock restoration. Watch this space!!
